HISTORY OF THE
CHICAGO BEARS
The
Chicago Bears were one of the 2 teams playing today who were in the NFL when it
began in 1920. Originally
known as the Daecatur Stanleys, the Bears were one of the founding members of
the NFL in 1920, when they were a company team for the A.E. Stanley Manufacturing
Company. The next year, George Halas - the Stanleys' manager, took over the ownership
of the team and moved it to Chicago, where he changed the name to the Bears. In
1932, Chicago won the the first NFL Championship Game 9-0 over the Portsmouth
Spartians. The Bears were one of the first teams to use the T-formation that all
offenses use today.\, and they popularized it when they destroyed the Redskins
73-0 in the 1940 NFL title game.From 1975 to 1987, the star of the Bears was Wakter
Payton, the leading rusher in the history of pro football, as well as the Bears'
career scoring and receiving leader. |
