BAY BUCCANEERS HISTORY Tampa Bay joined the NFL as an expansion
team in 1976. The Buccaneers were originally the fifth team in the AFC West, but
move the next year to the NFC Central. The Buccaneers became the first 0-14 team
in NFL history their first season, losing to each of the other AFC teams and to
Seattle (13-10). They're losing streak increased to 26 before they finally defeated
New Orleans 33-14 in 1977. Remarkably, two years later Tampa Bay won the NFC Central
title and proceeded to the NFC championship game, with a Los Angeles Rams 19-0.
That 1979 team and its successors had one of the best defenses in the NFL, led
by superstar defensive end Lee Roy Selmon and linebackers Hugh Green and David
Lewis. The Buccaneers offense was powered first by the running of Ricky Bell and
then by the running and receiving of James Wilder. |
