LIONS HISTORY The Lions were originally founded in Portsmouth,
Ohio, and known as the Spartans. they did not move to Detroit until 1934, when
they were purchased by George Richards, a Detroit radio station owner. The Lions
were one of the dominant teams of the 1950s, with a backfield of quarterback Bobby
Layne, halfbacks Doak Walker and Bob Hoernshcemeyer, and fullback Pat Harder.
During this period, they won three NFL titles in six years. In the late 1950s,
the Lions were purchased by William Clay Ford, the grandson of Henry Ford the
founder of the Ford motor Corp.through much of the 1970s, the Lions were brides
maids in the NFC Central division, finishing and second-place seven years in a
