REDSKINS HISTORY The Redskins were founded in 1932 as
the Boston Braves, but the next year or their name was changed to the Redskins.
In 1937 their owner, George Preston Marshall, disappointed by small attendants-even
though the Redskins had won the NFL East the previous year-moved his club to Washington.
The Redskins were one of the top teams between 1936 in 1945, playing in the NFL
title games six times in that decade. However, they did not return to prominence
until George Allen became coach in 1971 and led them to the playoffs five times
in six years. Washington's third great era was the 1980s. Under Joe Gibbs, the
Redskins made the playoffs 5 times in six years, winning the NFC title three times
and the Super Bowl championship twice. |
