ORLEANS SAINTS HISTORY The Saints were founded in 1967,
as the NFL's 16th team. Like the Dolphins the year before, the same scored on
opening kickoff of their first ever game, with rookie John Gilliam returning the
ball 94 yards for a touchdown against the Rams. Despite not having a winning record
until the 1987 season, the Saints have had their share of star players. The first
was split end Dan Abramowicz, who was slow and lumbering, but made himself one
of the best receivers and pro football by hard work. Another was a great quarterback
Archie Manning, who meant so much to the team that he was selected the NFL's most
valuable player in 1978, despite the Saints going only 7-9.
