Drills to Build a Dodge-First Offense
with Chris Robinson,
McDonough School Head Girls Lacrosse Coach;
Back-to-Back (2011, 2010 ) LaxPower High School Girls Lacrosse National Champions;
3x Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland State Champions at McDonough;
5x Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association State Champions;
Career coaching record; 198-15-1 career (.925 winning percentage)

Build a non-traditional dodging offense designed to dictate tempo and pressure the defense in settled offense.

Chris Robinson has successfully built McDonough into state and national champions through his innovative "dodge first" offense. His philosophy empathizes dodging to score rather than the more traditional offenses, which emphasize feeders behind the goal looking for cutters. Robinson's "dodge first" offense will limit your turnovers and increase your time of possession which puts more pressure on the defense and creates more scoring opportunities for your offense.

You will see Robinson's nationally ranked McDonough team practice his offensive philosophy through a series of build-up drills. This up-tempo practice works from a (1v0) to a (7v7) half-field scrimmage providing nine different game-like drills for the offense. The foundation of Robinson's offense is the dodge, so you will see drills that reinforce key responsibilities for the ball-carrier. Specifically, he teaches his players to dodge with their heads up and improve their cradling and shooting.

This offense begins by pressuring the defense with strong dodges to the goal. By constantly dodging to the goal with their heads up, Robinson teaches his players to read and then react to the defense. Ball carriers are taught how to "bounce" out of a double and look for a cutter while off-ball players are instructed to read their defender then instinctively react with a series of backdoor cuts or to fill open space.

Robinson's high intensity, competitive drills within confined spaces will improve your teams stick handling, decision making, off-ball play, and create more scoring opportunities. By introducing new ideas into commonly-used drills, Robinson provides a new spin on off-ball play while still relying on this pivotal element of girls' lacrosse.

This video is a must for youth and high school coaches who want to create a "dodge first" mentality in their offense, pressure the defense, and score more goals.

Skills & Drills to Develop the Complete Lacrosse Player
with Chris Robinson,
McDonough School Head Girls Lacrosse Coach;
Back-to-Back (2011, 2010 ) LaxPower High School Girls Lacrosse National Champions;
3x Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland State Champions at McDonough;
5x Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association State Champions;
Career coaching record; 198-15-1 career (.925 winning percentage)

Get "traditional" lacrosse drills framed within a competitive atmosphere.

The development of individual skills is the foundation for a successful lacrosse organization. Chris Robinson has provided an easy to follow blueprint suited for any organization committed to improving the development of their players. Coach Robinson demonstrates drills and skills though a progression of exercises that start with basic, individual skills and build to game-like situational experience.

Practice begins with one-on-one passing drills. Right and left handed proficiency is emphasized as players work through various passing techniques designed to help them develop basic skills. Other drills include:

  • Ground ball play techniques intended to develop on-field situational awareness.
  • Shuttle drills designed to maximize player involvement.
  • Grid drills that encourage competitiveness and simulate game situations.
  • Transition play that brings together all of the individual skills taught and allows the players to sharpen their skill in a game setting.
  • Coach Robinson's drills maximize active player participation. Almost every drill shown was designed to increase player involvement and yet still allow for detailed coach oversight. Players are encouraged to "take risks" in an effort to build their confidence and improve performance. As the repetition of drills progress, techniques are added to develop the exercises into offensive and defensive game situation drills.

    All of the drills shown can be modified to facilitate the needs of any organization from youth to college for both boys and girls lacrosse. Coach Robinson successfully engages his players with competitive practice skills and reward contests designed to encourage players to work harder and have fun with practice.

    These are the drills that helped create the nation's number one rated girls lacrosse team as recognized by US Lacrosse and ESPN. Think of how much this DVD can do for your organization.

    Drills and Techniques to Develop Up-Tempo Defense
    with Gene Peluso,
    Stevens Institute of Technology Head Men's Lacrosse Coach;
    Over 150 career wins

    Stop reacting to your opponent's offense! Learn an up-tempo defense that will enable you to dictate to the offense, put your opponent under pressure and generate transition opportunities for your team.

    Using a mixture of classroom presentations and on-field demonstrations, Gene Peluso outlines the basic rules and principles for his "30 Second Defense." Using easy to understand slide presentations and diagrams, Coach Peluso presents a variety of different defensive ideas and game scenarios. He then takes you to the practice field to demonstrate a wide variety of drills that will help your defense dictate to the offense, rather than simply reacting to it.

    With both settled and unsettled drills--ranging from 1-on-1 to half and full field--Peluso shows how to take advantage of the special situations defenses face on the field. He includes clear explanations and on-field drills demonstrating:

    • Full field 5-v-4 with the emphasis on aggressive defense and moving the ball.
    • A variety of unsettled situations to ensure your players can improvise and react to what's in front of them.
    • 4-v-4 Pressure Drill showing the fundamentals of off-ball play while putting maximum pressure on the ball carrier.
    • 1-v-1 with Slider teaching your players how to play on-ball, as well as how to time slides.
    • 2-v-2 Alley Drill with an emphasis on clearing and riding under pressure.
    • Points System - This valuable technique will reward your players for executing the fundamentals correctly and implementing the defensive philosophy with the added benefit of ensuring practices are competitive and intense.
    The video is aimed at coaches working with more advanced players but would help anyone looking to instill an aggressive defensive philosophy with strong fundamentals and a team ethos.

    This is an aggressive defense that will dictate the pace of the game, provide your offense with more scoring opportunities and putting your team in a position to win.

    Game Speed Drills for Creating Game Like Practices
    with Gene Peluso,
    Stevens Institute of Technology Head Men's Lacrosse Coach;
    Over 150 career wins

    Save practice time with drills that combine the conditioning and skill development required to win games.

    Gene Peluso demonstrates an up tempo practice style to teach and condition at the same time. He opens his drill book sharing more than 20 drills he runs on a regular basis to develop better defensive and offensive players. These are drills provide maximum player touches in a 10-15 minute time frame.

    Peluso explains his unique approach by dividing each practice into four quarters with each quarter designed to teach a game specific skill. The quarters are broken down into Shooting and Defense, Transition, Points of Emphasis, and Drills with a Twist. Each covers both offensive and defensive skills. Proper shooting and passing are emphasized with four and six station shooting drills that mimic game situations. He also demonstrates drills that teach proper pick and slip technique, ball exchanges, defensive stick handling in pressure scenarios and reinforcement of proper defensive positioning fundamentals.

    Transition and unsettled situations are highlighted with drills that will keep your players engaged and learning in both half- and full-field settings. He demonstrates drills that teach proper rides and clears after a shot to transition defensive recovery. Most of these drills will require your defensive players to play some offense and your offensive players to play defense.

    All drills are discussed in detail in a classroom with PowerPoint to explain why the drill is effective and then presented on field in a practice situation to give the drill more impact.

    This DVD will help any coach develop a dynamic practice environment that is both fun and challenging with lacrosse drills that give maximum individual touches in game like situations.

These passes will create ground balls and turnovers turning defense into offense in your opponent's half of the field.Peluso also divulges his favorite practice drills for strengthening effective riding and clearing skills. These drills include 2v2 Alley Drill, the 1v1 Revenge Drill, and the dynamic 54 Full Field Pressure Drill.

    The rides and drills on this DVD can lay the cornerstone to a successful season of creating havoc for your opponents on their clears. Coaches and players at all levels of the game will benefit from the insightful coaching techniques presented by Coach Peluso.

    Defensive 2-Pack
    LXD-02945A: with Lars Tiffany,
    Brown University Head Men's Lacrosse Coach

    Coach Tiffany has a great understanding of what it takes to be great on defense - he was a 2-time team captain and starter on defense for three years under Dom Starsia (now niversity of Virginia head coach) at Brown. Good communication between the six defensemen and the goalie are required to create strong team defense. The goalie's only goal is to watch the ball and communicate to the on ball defender. The off ball defenders determine the slides. The 'hot player' designates himself as 'hot' and asks his teammates to fill and second slide. Other verbal calls dictate the slide patterns: crease/crease, crease/adjacent, adjacent/adjacent, and cross crease. Slide scheme development starts with the 1 v 1 decision-making drill and progresses to a full catalog of drills that include 2 v 1, 2 v 2 with an outlet, etc. On the field, Tiffany begins with on ball play. Decision-making is the key part of team scheme development. The first slide, second slide, third slide and recovery are all demonstrated in drills on the field. The DVD finishes with game clips of 6 v 6 defense, demonstrating a variety of slide packages.

    LXD-02945B: with Lars Tiffany,
    Brown University Head Men's Lacrosse Coach

    Coach Tiffany presents a step-by-step development of the fundamentals of man down defense. He begins with a discussion on personnel. A decision must be made between the best defenders and a specialty unit. Players must be intelligent and have a good stick. Man down defense relies on anticipation of skip lanes and the ability to knock down passes and shots. Tiffany has created a catalog of drills that can help identify and improve the personnel for man down defense. The 2 v 1 knock down drill works on the drop step technique and the 4 v 2 drill puts two defenders in an urgent situation and requires communication and changing positions. The 5 v 3 drill addresses the skip lanes. A series of drills get progressively more challenging for advanced players. A drill to develop offense and man down defensive technique is the 3v2/4v3/5v4 drill. A section on terminology is important to define all-important verbal calls in lacrosse. Man down schemes used against the 3-3 offense include the center string, the diamond, 4v3 up top and 3v2 up top. Defending the 1-3-2 offensive, Tiffany diagrams on the white board using both 5 man and 4 man schemes. He then takes to the field to demonstrate many of the drills and schemes. Game clips of the man down defense show the system in action.

These build-up drills train your attackers how to handle game situations, to produce hard cuts that are difficult to defend, and to finish their attacks. These drills serve a dual purpose, as they are effective in training your individual defense as well.

      Offensive Sets
      Learn the basic movements of three popular offenses: Motion Offense, Triangle Offense and the Crisscross Offense. Timchal shares her philosophy on when to use each offense based on what the defense is running.

      Timchal's Motion Offense features features the crease dodger, back door cuts, isolations, drawing doubles, inside feeds and shots. She utilizes this offense against tight shell defenses.

      The Triangle Offense gives you good balance. It places players behind the goal, post, and along the perimeter on both sides of the cage, allowing you to attack from the left, right and behind the net. Timchal explains why it's effective against intense pressure.

      When an opponent is using a combination of the shell and power defenses (Blue Bird Defense), Timchal uses the Crisscross Offense. This offense can be used against all three types of defenses as it incorporates a double pick on the ball and a single pick on the ball.

      Timchal also reveals her "Special" set to get the ball to her best player when she is being face-guarded by defense.

      This DVD provides compelling insight into the drills and sets used by the all-time winningest coach in Division I Lacrosse history.

      1-4-1 & 2-3-1 Adjustable Zone Offense

      former University of Maryland Men's Lacrosse Coach;
      #3 in wins (active coaches);
      3 NCAA Semifinal appearances (2003, 2005 and 2006); 2x ACC Coach of the Year

      A true innovator in college lacrosse, Coach Cottle tackles the difficult task of presenting zone defense with clarity and ease. This carefully crafted DVD is delivered with marker board diagrams and outstanding on-field demonstrations. Coach Cottle highlights several zone offenses to prepare your team for any defense. Tips for success focus on teaching freelance 1-4-1 zone offense before adding other components. Starting with the fundamentals, Cottle points out four individual and team skills needed for solid zone play and then discusses the 2-2-2, 1-4-1, 2-3-1 and circle formations. The advantages of this system include: Improved passing skills, a focus on taking good shots, enhanced play in the crease, and additional structure to your zone attack. Because opponents can execute a variety of zone defenses, Coach Cottle believes in having several different attacks. Discussion centers on many different formations and how spacing can change formations for maximum effectiveness. These changes are illustrated when shifting from the 1-4-1 to the 1-3-2, and from the 2-3-1 to the 3-3. From these formations players can carry from any of the areas. Another strategy discussed is the "3-3 combo", which adds a pick to the carry, roll off and pop off. The information, teaching points, and drills are useful for lacrosse coaches at any level.

      John Danowski Skills and Drills 2-Pack
      LXD-03868A: with John Danowski,
      Duke University Men's Lacrosse Coach; 2010 NCAA Champs;
      2007 NCAA Runner-Up; 2007 ACC Coach of the Year;
      3x ACC regular season and tournament champions; Over 250 career wins

      Every ground ball has the potential to change the game, provide momentum for your team or deflate your opponent. Your players must develop the mentality that they will go after and fight for every ground ball.

      2010 NCAA National Championship coach John Danowski teaches and demonstrates the importance of effort, technique and the three phases of ground balls.

      Danowski delivers a combination of non-contact skeleton drills and live contact drills that work on these concepts while also simulating game situations. All drills are broken down into individual, group and team drills. Each position participates in every drill--offensive or defensive, to help develop a high lacrosse IQ.

      Ground Ball Phases (important components)

      • Face-off (Wing Play) - Train your players to box out and pick up the ball on their right or left side, allowing them to get inside position no matter where the ball is located. Drills include the draw play drill and the box play drill.
      • Offensive End - Players must chase with two hands, move the ball off the ground, bust adjacent to the ball, and move the ball two times (make two passes to spread out the defense). All of this leads to swarming, which Coach Danowski explains and diagrams in detail. Live 2-on-1, 1-on-1 and skeleton swarming drills are demonstrated and explained on the offensive end.
      • 3. Defensive End - All of your players must be alert for the ball at all times. Players must chase with two hands, give great effort, understand the 7-on-6 situation, run to daylight (run to the open area), turn away from pressure, put themselves in a good position at least 85% of the time, and breakout. A live half-field drill actively trains these fundamentals.
      Having a great plan, great effort and great technique are key to chasing ground balls. Give your team an edge in picking up ground balls by implementing these proven ideas and drills into your program.

      LXD-03868B: with John Danowski,
      Duke University Men's Lacrosse Coach; 2010 NCAA Champs;
      2007 NCAA Runner-Up; 2007 ACC Coach of the Year;
      3x ACC regular season and tournament champions; Over 250 career wins

      John Danowski lays out his strategies and approaches for teaching stick work. He starts in the classroom detailing practice strategies for stick work. Danowski believes it makes more sense to use drills that mimic game situations than traditional line drills. All of his stick work drills simulate some game situations.

      At Duke, Coach Danowski breaks the drills into two areas:

      • Non-contact skeleton drills which emphasize fundamentals.
      • Live contact drills which allow the players to see the consequences of their actions.
      These drills can be individual, group or team oriented.

      Danowski believes that every player should have a high lacrosse IQ, therefore all positions (including the goalie) are involved in every drill; offensive and defensive. This helps each player understand exactly what is going on out on the field no matter their position.

      Moving to the practice field, watch and listen as Coach Danowski explains each drill used to develop his players' stick work. He begins with individual skeleton drills - passing (2-on-0, 3-on-0) on the run, offensive passing, defensive breakouts, fast-break shooting, cutting, and full field breakouts. These non-contact drills mimic game situations while allowing players to perfect their stick skill mechanics.

      Coach Danowski then moves into group drills, putting the individual drills together - breakouts, 3-on-2 scrapping, 4-on-3, full field transitions, 3-on-2 scrapping with a trailer, and half-field team offense.

      Finally, Coach Danowski shares live full field team drills, putting all of the individual and group techniques to work. You will see how the individual drills are put into action in live game situations.

      Developing stick skills takes time, but using game situation drills such as these will help your players improve as individuals as well as a team. Take advantage of these time-tested drills and implement into your program to enhance your players' stick work.

Overall, this philosophy is based on three elements: offense, defense and riding. All three are geared to force the opposition to make specific preparation for Kaley-coached teams. Pressure and cutting off passing lanes are the keys to this aggressive approach. Through a marker board presentation and on-field demonstrations, Kaley highlights three pressure spots: two top, two side, and crease behind. He stresses the value of practicing 6 vs. 5, leading up to implementing the team zone attack. Adjustments have been a big part of Kaley's philosophy and winning program. He shares his most powerful adjustments as he describes the Black call, Fire call, and the 500's. An all out application of pressure is the result of the "Red" call. An experienced strategist, Kaley feels that his adjustments make opponents adjust to him. The Pressure Zone Defense is one of the major aspects of his incredible success in collegiate lacrosse! Developed by combining pressure to his winning "man down" scheme, this defense will provide an edge to the coaches who adopt it.

Through white board diagrams and practice footage, Coach Timchal describes the benefits of each as she shows you how to install each pattern into your system. The motion features the crease dodger, back door cut, clear space cutting, net drive, inside feed, inside shots and back side options. The triangle's primary strength is attacking both sides of the cage. Players assume positions behind the goal, post and along the perimeter. By attacking the left side, right side and behind the net, this offense puts great pressure on the defense to stop shots on the net. Timchal shares the Magic and Shark set out of the offense that can score vital goals at the end of the half. In addition, Timchal presents drills to help reinforce her instruction.

      LXD-03667B: with Phil Barnes,
      University of North Carolina Assistant Women's Lacrosse Coach

      Use this effective warm up progression to touch on every aspect of goalkeeping throughout the week.

      UNC Assistant Coach Phil Barnes shares his knowledge on how to warm up lacrosse goalkeepers. This video will help you get the most out of your goalkeepers with simple and effective drills;

      • Stepping - Improve your first step to get to the ball quicker. This drill trains the stick and feet to get to the seven defensive areas. Focuses on a quick and clean stick turnover.
      • Shots - Perfect the movements that will help your goalie see the shots and take a correct arc. Your goalie will see shots from all angles - high shots, mid shots, low shots, bounce shots and shots from anywhere.
      • Side-to-side - Shooters move side-to-side exposing any holes the goalie doesn't have covered. Ensures the goalie is focused - not moving ahead or falling behind the shooter.
      • Crease - Give your goalies a good footwork warm up and a look at all of the shots they will see around the crease.
      • Low to High Feed from X - Works on finding the shooter and following the flight of the ball.
      • Low to High outside X - Teaches the goalie to follow passes while keeping their footwork sharp and their hips open.
      • Sweeps - Helps the goalie recognize traditional vs 90 degree sweeps - working on timing and angle of the arc.
      • 45 Degree Side to Side - Preps the goalie to stop shots moving side-to-side and to get to each side quickly as they can with proper footwork.
      Coach Barnes gives great insight into how you can run these drills while also recognizing possible flaws in your goalies' techniques.

      This video will help develop your goalie's performance in the net and in turn help improve your team's future success.
