VIKINGS HISTORY The Vikings were founded in 1961 as the
NFL's 14th team. Their initial head coach was Norman Van Brockin, who had quarterbacked
Philadelphia to the NFL title just the previous season. The Vikings were not a
consistent winner until Bud Grant became the head coach. In his second year, grants
his team to the NFL Central division title, and the next year he led them to the
first of their four Super Bowl's, or of which have been losses. During the late
1960s and early 1970s, the Vikings had one of the greatest offensive line's overall
time, the "purple people eaters", consisting of defensive ends Jim Marshall
Larsen. For many years, the Vikings' offensive star was quarterback of Fran Tarkenton,
the most productive quarterback in NFL history. |
